acupuncture benefits

Acupuncture has been shown to be a safe & drug free solution for many conditions that arise during pregnancy.

Assisting with these conditions can improve quality of life, & prevent some symptoms from becoming serious enough to require medical intervention.

We support team care and happily work together with your midwife, GP, or health care provider.

Pre-conception + conception Care

Fertility Acupuncture is designed to support your fertility potential from pre-conception through to trying to conceive, & whether trying naturally or assisted through IVF. Sessions may focus on relieving stress, hormone balancing, cycle and ovulation regulation, reducing the adverse side effects from hormonal treatments, promoting optimal follicle health & ovarian response, improve egg quality, or improve sperm count, motility & morphology.

Ideal treatment length

Follicle growth takes around 90 days before an egg is released, and so to best prepare uterine lining, balance hormones, lower anxiety & give your body the best chance of producing high quality eggs, it’s preferred that weekly treatments begin 90-120 days before conception/IVF.

Sperm also takes around 90 day’s to mature & the same treatment frequency applies. Treatment dose may vary based on your diagnosis.

pregnancy support

Throughout each trimester of pregnancy, symptoms can vary wildly. Acupuncture looks to support you at all stages of pregnancy.

The types of things people seek treatments for include nausea, prevention of miscarriage, reflux, anxiety, nervous system support, headaches, back, hip and shoulder pain, swelling & oedema, optimal positioning for breech & posterior position, pre-labour preparation & start of labour.

Where relevant, we work with your health team, midwife & doula to best support you.

Ideal treatment length

First trimester we usually like to treat weekly to support you during this time of rapid change. For severe symptoms, frequency may increase.

Second trimester is often when there’s a change to take a breather, however people seek help as-needed for things including swelling, back ache, nausea, congestion, anxiety. Those with a history of miscarriage may seek us more regularly.

Third trimester tends to focus more around weekly pre-labour prep (see below).

pre-birth acupuncture

Pre-birth Acupuncture is a series of sessions from 35 weeks gestation that can enhance the prospects of a smooth & efficient labour, or kick start labour when slow to establish.

Acupuncture may also reduce the amount of medical intervention required, such as induction, instrumental delivery, and caesarian section. It further has a positive impact on pregnancy-induced hypertension, posterior position, back pain, sciatica, pubic symphysis, and reduce anxiety or stress.

Where relevant, we work with your health team, midwife & doula to best support you.

Ideal treatment

Usually once a week from 35 weeks, and twice a week from week 38. For those at the 40+ week mark, treatment will increase to every 2-3 days

post partum care

Having a little-y to take care of is one thing, but who’s taking care of you? The fourth trimester is incredibly important for nourishment and support. Some things people seek treat for breastfeeding problems including mastitis, balancing emotions, help with perineal healing, constipation, post-op healing, pain, mood support, and low energy.

‘Mother-warming treatments’ are used to aid postnatal recovery and use a moxa stick (a medicinal herb) to warm points over your abdomen following childbirth. It may be helpful to build breast milk supply, and in the healing of cesarean section scars.

Ideal treatment length

Moxa is usually started three to four days following childbirth and then used as needed for the first two weeks.

Acupuncture is then used once a week commencing from two weeks postpartum for three weeks to promote stamina and an efficient recovery.

miscarriage

During this sensitive time, it’s vital you feel supported through both the physical and emotional aspects of going through miscarriage.

Acupuncture works to help regulate your nervous system, allows the uterus to cleanse fully and rebuild the smooth uterine lining, which is crucial for implantation, & offer supportive treatments in the recovery from a D & C to help facilitate an easy, complete natural miscarriage.

Herbal medicine may also be advised.
